Noel Park Primary School: Flower Boxes for Railings

Hi All,

I just wanted to let you know about a project that I' am overseeing via the Noel Park Big Local: Green Spaces Project. Noel Park Primary School, located on Gladstone Avenue and Lymington Avenue. Outside the school, on the pavement are metal railings. I had the idea of installing flower box planters to the railings. I have done a lot of research and found a suitable planter. It contains a reservoir and therefore eliminates the need for constant watering!

I have met with the school and contacted the Highways agency and Haringey Council to seek written permission. The project started last week and progress is steady. I think we would need 6-8 planters. There will be a community workshop to help with the installation, planting etc in either late March or early April.

On top of this, there is a lot of potential to install Wildflower Tree Pits*. A treated timber frame lined and filled with soil with the trunk protected against erosion. Seeds or plants can then be planted and walla! the neighbourhood starts to look a bit greener and nicer :)

See you around the neighbourhood!

This is a really good idea. There's some lovely railing planters on Regency Street, WC1. Really brightens up the street.

Hi Julien: I think you put this under the wrong discussion.

Is this the one you're looking for? http://noelparknet.ning.com/forum/topics/cast-iron-flower-guard-for...

The kids will definitely be involved Edel and that’s a fantastic idea to generate plant suggestions, cheers!

I like plants with a scent  - but what do the children want? Can you ask them for suggestions through the PTA or gardening club?

Thank you Jo.

I should be hearing back from Highways by the 13th March so watch this space!

Out of interest, what type of plants would you all like to see populating the flow box planters? I was thinking about Ivy alongside some colourful bedding plants but it’s just a suggestion.
